"Teach Us To Pray"

This week we'll be looking at what Jesus has to say about prayer. The thought that has been hitting me over and over in my study this past week is the question, "Is this for real??"

Jesus says some amazing things about prayer that at times have left me wondering if he really meant that!

We studied Jesus' words in John 13 and 15 last week. In the middle of those two passages you read:

John 14:12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. 13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. 14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!

We've been looking at Jesus' teaching for a couple months now. The call to come and lay down your life is a strand running through nearly everything he says. This week we will look at why in the world we would do that: In laying down our lives we get God; we get to be with God; we get to commune with God!

Come this Sunday night and join together in marveling at Jesus' work to bring us to God and his work in opening the door for us to come into the presence of our Creator and speak words to the one who's words brought the world into existence.

Prepare your hearts and minds by reading the above passage along with Matthew 7.7-26. You may also want to spend some time flipping through the Psalms and looking at the ways men of faith in the past have prayed to God in their writings.

Looking forward to seeing you all AT MY HOUSE this week!

This Sunday Brock will lead us through the word's of Jesus regarding prayer. One of the remarkable realities of the Christian faith is that God, almighty and all-powerful, will respond to our requests. When we pray, we do it in Jesus' name. And one of the most comforting and confidnence producing truths we can know is that this Jesus is the Everlasting King. We pray in the name of the King of universe. We come before God with all the security of the Kingship of Jesus. He is King, and he is King for us, on our behalf. This week we will sing of our wonderous and gracious King.

What Do You Want Most?

"We never imagine that getting our heart's deepest desires might be the worst thing that can ever happen to us." -Tim Keller

For the past few weeks, we have been learning what is really means to follow Jesus in our "Jesus And..." series. One re-occuring theme has come to the surface: if we want the life of joy and love that Jesus offers, we must lay down our life of selfishness and pride. Maybe you're not convinced yet. Maybe you're trying to have your cake and eat it too. And maybe you haven't yet come to a place where you've finally achieved or received everything you were hoping for, and found it lacking.

The real trick, is to actually have our desires changed. In our sin, we desire things that destroy us, that contradict our human nature and the image of God within us. Our only hope is new desires, new affections, new loves. Jesus gave his life that you might be rescued from the slavery of death-incurring desires, and brought into the life of "a thousand joys" at the feet of your Creator.

Over the next 6 weeks we will singing songs that teach us about different aspects of who Jesus is and what he has done for us. This week, we will be singing about Jesus as our High Priest. In the Old Testament, it was the role of the priest to stand between the people and God, both literally and spiritually. God's glorious presence resided in the midst of Israel, in the innermost room of the temple. The high priest could only enter once a year, and only when he had purified himself in order to make a sacrifice for the sins of the nation. So while the temple clearly displayed God's desire to be near to his people, it also showed the distance sin has created. The high priest's role was to help close that gap, but he could do little because he himself was sinful.

Then came Jesus. The writer of Hebrews says that he is the High Priest we need. He became a man, so that he can sympathize with our weaknesses, and know the struggles of this sin cursed earth. And yet, because he never sinned, he has full access to God; not once a year, but in constant fellowship; not into a temple made by men, but into the very presence of God; not because of a bull or goat sacrifice, but by the sacrifice of his own life. Jesus as our High Priest has brought us back into fellowship with God and we will sing and celebrate him this Sunday.
